Colors, their meaning and the energy they bring are every important in the practice of Feng Shui. After all, by definition – Feng Shui is the belief in using colors, the placement of objects and creating a flow of positive chi to improve your environment and maximize balance and harmony. Each color is also associated with the five elements and their cycles. The five elements of Feng Shui are fire, earth metal, water and wood.

In Feng Shui colors are broken down into categories of yin and yang, with each color representing a different element as well. Yin colors are more relaxing and promote healing of the mind, body and spirit. Yang colors are, of course on the other side of the spectrum. Yang colors are more vibrant yet complimentary to their yin partners. Yellow in Feng Shui:In Feng Shui the color yellow is associated with the sun. The sun gives light which in turns provides life. So bright yellows tend to boost morale and cause cheer. Yellow is ideal for lifting spirits and energizing yourself. You may want to use yellow in rooms such as the kitchen, study or office. However keep in mind that too much yellow can have a negative impact as well – such as anxiety! Red in Feng Shui: It is the color of passion, excitement and anger as well. It is associated with the fire element, because of its vibrancy – it causes people to stop and pay attention. Although red is the color of passion – painting your bedroom that color is a bad idea. Why? Because once again, it is a vibrant attention getting color – painting your sleeping area red will leave you sleepless and tired. Red is great for a much needed energy boost. Blue in Feng Shui: Blue is a yin color. It is humble, relaxing, tranquil and very reflective in its energy. Have you ever stopped and considered why or how it is that taking the time to gaze at a beautiful blue sky is so calming? It is because of the subduing yin element. If you are prone to depression or sadness – don’t surround yourself with blues. Black in Feng Shui: The absorbing feeling of black invites exploration, encourages mystery and gives an air of power and confidence. We like black because it’s a great accent color in any room. Pink in Feng Shui: A mixture of intimate white and passionate red, pink is the color of romance. Use pink wherever you want to feel loved, nurtured and treasured. Pink is an ideal color for bedrooms. If this color is too feminine for your taste, you can use it as an accent color. Avoid pink if others take advantage of your generosity. White in Feng Shui: Connected to the metal element, white is the color of focus, intensity and purity. It promotes creativity, as white acts like a blank canvas. White is a wonderful color for kitchens, particularly if you like inventing recipes or crafting gourmet meals. White is also a good color for an art studio. If you’re suffering from cancer, white is a good color to focus upon, as it inhibits the growth of cells. Stay away from white if you are overly critical or have trouble expressing affection. Green in Feng Shui: Associated with the wood element, green is the color of growth. Use green wherever you want to experience inspiration, adventure and change. This is an ideal color for an exercise room or library. You should also incorporate green wherever you feel stuck or stagnant. Avoid green if you have trouble focusing. You should also stay away from this color if you’re struggling with cancer. (Green stimulates growth, and cancer patients strive to inhibit the growth of malignant tumors.) Purple in Feng Shui: Symbolic of royalty, purple is the color of abundance, wealth and power. Use purple wherever you feel deficient or insecure. Purple is also associated with spirituality, and is a wonderful color to integrate into a meditation room, yoga studio or spa. Stay away from purple if you are prone to fantasy or escapism.
